BBC SCHOOL PROJECT

Scindia School – Gwalior

The BBC News Report Project is an initiative by the British Council in partnership with Britain’s national media corps; BBC. The objective of this initiative is to give 11-16 year-old students the chance to make their own news reports at school and to broadcast these to a real audience via the internet and other media.

Before the commencement of this project, a brief was given to the students and the teachers which was very similar to actual media briefings about steps to be followed for creating news and the ethics of journalism. They were told how news is supposed to abide by 3 C’s i.e. it has to be clear, correct and concise.  Importance of being nonpartisan and factual authenticity was emphasised and agreed upon. In the course of the workshop, the students had to think of a news idea, plan it and then finally present it somewhat like it happens in actual newsrooms. Desk responsibilities, reporting, bureau functionalities etc were explained.

This project gives students an opportunity to be both editors as well as the news crew. Our students prepared news clips on important social and international affairs like creating awareness about the desecration of national monuments, care for the differently abled and the London Olympics.
